Gyejok Mt. with elevation of 423.6m was referred to as Bisuri and Baekdal Mt. in the past due to the legend that rain falls when the mountain cries during severe draught. It was also referred to as the Bonghwang (phoenix) Mt. because of its shape is similar to that of Phoenix. It is said that, during the time of Joseon Dynasty, a benevolent man from Song Clan instructed the name to be changed to Gyejok Mt. because valuable names must be hidden.
Although the Gyejok Mt. range extends to the Sikjang Mt. over the Seycheon Hill, it forms a small mountain range with distance of 16km from the Yongwun-dong in the south to the Seokbong-dong in Shintanjin and Miho-dong inn the vicinity of Daecheong Dam in the north.
Bonghwajeong (observation deck) has been built at the summit of Gyejok Mt., which is frequently visited by many people due to beautiful forest and valleys, and numerous historical cultural assets. Refreshing and clean air at the fortress enables the visitors to experience the grace of nature. Clean blue color of Daecheong Lake that is visible through the forest any one climbs the mountain adds refresh feeling to the visitors, and the scene of setting sun in the evening seen from the summit is one of the 8 most outstanding scenes of Daejeon.
Gyejok Mt. Fortress constructed of rocks during Baekje Dynasty boasts its majestic figure on the summit of Gyejok Mt., and is the largest and best preserved mountain fortress among more than 30 fortresses of Baekje dynasty in Daejeon. It was constructed with large Temoe type stone construction technique. Its circumference is 1,037m with height range of 7~10.5m and width of 3.7m for the fortress walls. The fortress also has a huge well inside its boundaries.
