Gyejok Mt. is renowned as the venue to greet the New Year by the residents of Daejeon. Countless number of people gather at the Gyejok Mt. Fortress on the first day of every New Year to experience the strong emotion of seeing the sun rise in the midst of dawn of new year, pledge energetic new start and progress in the New Year, and pray for the happiness and well-being of each other. Majestic and splendid scene of sunrise at the Gyejok Mt. has become highly popular as one of the most sought after event to be experienced throughout the country, and the New Years Festival commences in the early hours of January 1 every year at the Nammunji Square in the Gyejok Mt. Fortress at the summit of the Gyejok Mt. Participants climb up to the Gyejok Mt. Fortress in time for the sunrise, light up candles with wishes for the New Year and begin the festival to welcome the dawn of new year.
